　　1，表示過(guò)去某段時(shí)間正在進(jìn)行的動(dòng)作。 When he arrived at 9:30 am, two people were waiting outside the office.

　　當他早上9:30到辦公室時(shí)，有兩個(gè)人在外面等著(zhù)他。

　　It was a dark night. The wind was blowing hard and the rain was falling heavily.

　　那是一個(gè)漆黑的夜晚�？耧L(fēng)怒號，暴雨如注。

　　2，過(guò)去一個(gè)動(dòng)作發(fā)生時(shí)，另一個(gè)動(dòng)作正在進(jìn)行中.While we were having maths the head master broke into the classroom.

　　我們在上數學(xué)課時(shí)，校長(cháng)闖了進(jìn)來(lái)。

　　Mary was making a dress when she cut her finger. 瑪麗割破手指時(shí)正在做衣服。

　　3，過(guò)去時(shí)間里兩件事同時(shí)發(fā)生. While Mr. Atkins was reading the newspaper, his wife Mrs. Atkins was preparing the dinner.

　　阿特金斯先生在看報紙的時(shí)候，他的妻子阿特金斯太太正在準備晚餐

　　兩件事同時(shí)發(fā)生，一般用while表示“當…時(shí)候”（不要用when）
